Voices in my head
It’s March 2025 and somewhere in a leafy, green part of England sits a rather disgruntled man. A recent missed promotion and a looming major birthday has him in somewhat of a dour mood, feeling as though life is passing by.
It has been a while since he last toyed with the idea of getting back into podcasting – something that he was one of the first to do in the UK. The issue was not the technical side or the ideas; it was the voices that he would need to create what he had envisioned for some time. A full cast production.
Mulling it over, he decides that he should at least give it a go, even if only for his own sanity.
Where to get the voices he would need? Luckily, he was in a Discord community that had plenty of potential voices. Would they be interested in his idea?
A quick message to one of the owners of the site asking for permission to ‘recruit’ elicited a ‘yeah sure, go for it’ response. And so, the message was posted. No great hopes were held as this was somewhat of an ask. There was to be a cast of two and a host of folks to kindly take part in creating the reality. Now to wait.
Into the late evening and the wee hours of the morning the mobile phone pinged – ‘yes’, ‘yes’, ‘yes’. There was to be very little sleep that night as the phone kept pinging and the yeses grew. A ‘Cast Only’ Discord was hastily created and folks invited.
When the phone buzzed this time with the morning alarm and after maybe 3 hours sleep the realisation dawned of what had been created. ‘Oh god! Why did I do that’ was the thought that immediately came to mind. ‘What have you done!’
Of course three hours sleep and those first moments after waking when the natural ‘happier’ chemicals in the brain are at their lowest didn’t help.
More messages throughout the day and a few cups of coffee brought back the initial enthusiasm and so the long process of creating scenarios and a plan of action commenced. There was already a ‘pitch’ written to himself that outlined exactly what the series should be, and this was shared and the series intro put into production.
This pre-recorded and produced series intro would serve as the inspiration (when inspiration was needed) to continue with the project.
The date was set of Halloween 2025 for the release of the first episode and although it would be some months before the actual play recording started the first episode Convergence launched on time of 31.10.2025.
In the meantime, more folks came on board from other parts of the ttrpg community bringing with them encouragement and enthusiasm and in many ways New Dawn became a community. A community of voices to bring to life a late-night idea to create something a little special and different to anything else.
