Creativity is the spark of life…

Creativity is the spark of life…

I have just spent over the last four days - 40 plus hours scripting, editing, sound designing and producing episodes of New Dawn.

I don’t get paid for this. I have learned all the required skills over 25 years of ‘dabbling’ in audio production and podcast production since 2001. I have used so far one week of annual leave and there is another to come next week in order to put these hours in - that is beyond the regular late evenings after work.

Episode 4 of New Dawn I believe is the most ambitious yet in terms of sound design and the number of people voicing parts for the full audio drama sections. It is only due to these amazing and talented folks who believe in the project, lending their voices and time, that allow New Dawn to be a reality.

Episode 4 is out and episodes 5 through 8 are rough cut and the scripts written for half of them.

In a time when everything seems to want to prompt you to use AI to ‘create’ and the world itself seems to be in so much turmoil turning to ‘real’ creativity is a very cathartic escape. It also, for me at least, brings with it an amazing community of what I would now call friends who also believe in human creativity and that are eager to breathe life into the project.

Having started audio production and podcasting back in 2001 it also never ceases to amaze me how far things have come in terms of what you can produce as one person with I will admit a fairly good set-up, but nevertheless at home and not in a studio or with a company behind you. Full creative control has its upsides and downsides. You can fully realise your vision on the one hand. On the other – ‘you’ must be your own cheerleader, manager, writer, editor, sound designer and sound editor, ‘talent’ scout’, producer and marketer.

But that is fine with me, although some encouragement now and then does not go amiss.

I think it can be quite easy to be disparaged by both world in general and by the proliferation of Ai and Ai generated content. However, there will always be those who seek out that human connection and creativity and those who want to provide that human connection and creativity, and that is why I create.

Creativity is a journey and not a destination. It’s what we learn along the way and how we grow not the final work that matters.
