project realisation

It feels like some productive time has been spent here over the last few days.

Two projects have seen their realisation with the launch of both Paranormal Nation – The Interviews (which I wrote about in the previous post) and Shattered Realities. So far there is episode one out for both series and others will follow on a fairly loose schedule.

Paranormal Nation – The Interviews follows one of the four Paranormal Nation YouTube gang each episode as they the interview an ‘experiencer. They are single location and minimal cast episodes with the format being of a fact-finding interview ahead of the full Paranormal Nation series. They are fully dramatized but within a single location.

Initially I had intended these to be a series of five-minute shorts The reality is that the first one has ran nearly twenty-five minutes, as will the second and so a longer format has been set. I had wanted an easier and less time consuming to produce series than Paranormal Nation, and that is to some extent still true.

Shattered Realities are single person narrated original short stories with inspiration taken from some of H.P. Lovecraft’s works. I had initially intended to verbatim produce narrated and sound designed copies of H.P. Lovecraft works however I quickly realised that there were several issues.

The language used is not particularly relatable, there are issues with many descriptions and the stories I don’t think hold up well in many cases. This prompted me to do some thinking with the result that I realised I wanted to create new stories around the concepts bringing them up to date and avoiding the issues with language and attitude. I also wanted to give the series a very distinct feel with considered sound design underpinning the stories and acting as a second character. Supporting, not overwhelming - but certainly an important second character. This is something that I feel I have achieved in the first episode – The Prop. The sound design was a particularly enjoyable aspect of putting the first episode together.

Voice Actor, and extremely kind and enthusiastic supporter of my projects – Matthew Ewald, turned in an amazing performance for the first episode, for which I am truly grateful. Subsequent stories will be narrated by other voices with each story being the personal experiences and recollections of a different character per episode. Matthew is going to be a hard act to follow, but I am sure the following episode will be just as good.

The second episode of The Interviews is in production while the third is still being written. I am still deciding on the inspiration for the second Shattered Reality.

The first episodes – Paranormal Nation – The Interviews, The Massachusetts X-Files and Shattered Reality – The Prop are both out now on all major podcasting platforms.
